The evening began like any other at BSL. Early arrivals sipped drinks in the booths while John D played an early set of genre-straddling, explosion-in-a-record-shop brilliance. So you can imagine his bemusement when, while noting with satisfaction what a great idea playing Paul McCartney and the Sisters of Mercy back to back was, he was approached by a man with a heavy German accent who inquired “WHEN DO ZE STRIPPERS START?” Upon being asked what on earth he was talking about, the man pointed at the BSL flyer (which contains line drawings of cybermen dancing in a field of lasers) and insisted, “ZE GURLS, ZE STRIPPERS!” This led to speculation that there may well have simultaneously been a group of intense young men in skinny ties in a Spearmint Rhino, pestering the management to hurry up and get the post-punk bands on stage. Ironically, after the gentleman had left and the club had filled up, one of the more enthusiastic couples on the dancefloor were narrowly prevented by the bouncers from having sex right there and then. Clearly, playing The Fall and Sir Mix-A-Lot in the same club has some libidinous effect of which we were previously unaware. Here’s the setlist. And we know it gives us the horn just reading it. |
